A portal is form of magic.....
According to Warlic (Enter the Portal), there are three types of portals that a wizard can learn to manipulate: dimensional, spacial, and temporal. Each kind of portal has its own dangers.
- Dimensional portals can transport someone from one dimension to another, e.g. the portal between Lore and the Ethereal Realm. They might transport someone's spirit but leave their body behind.
- Spacial portals can move someone or something from one place to another, within the same dimension, e.g. one can teleport himself from Battleon to Lolosia, or elsewhere. They might send people to the bottom of an ocean or the inside of a mountain.
- Temporal portals are for travel through time itself, and so are the hardest for any wizard to master. Because of that, they are very rare. These portals most often appear due to circumstances beyond any wizard's control, and can often be by-products of Dimensional or Spacial portal creation. Possibly the most dangerous type of portal, as travelling through time, one might forever alter the present by changing something in the past, or to wreak havoc. It is recommended that young wizards never attempt to create a Time portal; they are for use only in extreme circumstances, and if no other tactic works.
During the Carnax incident, a number of temporal portals began to appear naturally, connecting present-day Lore and 1,000 years in its future. Adventurers and the Order travelled through time to defeat the Horde of Makkisar, and its Carnaxspawn. Ultimately, upon Carnax and its master's defeat, the temporal occurrence finally ceased.
